The Emperor Henry of the Holy Roman Empire is dying and his wife, the Empress Matilda is in danger from those who would use her to gain the title and the power, King Henry of England sends Alfraed of Norton to rescue her and avoid a war. With enemies from France, Flanders and the Empire as well as Norman traitors, the handful of Northern Knights have to fight across Europe and back. A fast moving novel which moves from Germany to the Scottish borders in the turbulent times of the early twelfth century when friends could become foes overnight.

Northern Knight The Anarchy Series Book 3 eBook Griff Hosker

The Anarchy series of a storyline of fictional accounts about a half Saxon-half Greek knight named Alfraed, who rises through the English nobility by serving King Henry in both England, Normandy, and beyond. Fathered by a Saxon veteran of the invasion of England by William the Conqueror who flees to Constantinople to become a member of the elite Varangian Guard, Alfraed came to England so his father and his oathsworn warriors could die in their homeland. His father is treacherously killed during the first book, leading to the elevation of our knight to Lord of the Manor of Norton. In Northern Knight, Hosker seems to perfect the ability to chop his books into three pieces, making what is still a short book seem much longer.

Hoskers strength is that he has great pacing, and never slows down. His weakness is that sometimes it would be good to explain some details, dive a little bit into the esoteric, and let the view of the world swing around beyond the immediate focus of Alfraed. He never does so. Instead, he seems dragged along by his own character. Several times the knight thinks to himself that he should find a priest to accompany them in battle, both for healing and spiritual support. But he never acts on this impulse, and it will recur throughout the next several books. Similarly, the editing is not getting any better. Spelling mistakes, double punctuations, and simple mistakes that could be corrected by proof reading or an amateur editor abound far too much.

What I do enjoy about the story is that the author has Alfraed at least somewhat struggle with his divided loyalties between his wife the Lady Adele, and the Empress Matilda. He does so internally and privately, only occasionally assisted by his loyal knight Sir Edward, who is one of the best characters in this series, and criminally underused.

The story begins with the death of Emperor Henry, and the mission that draws Alfraed back to Germany, where he has to escort the Empress back to her father, King Henry. While these are simply historical facts, it illustrates that occasionally in this series names get confusing. Hosker could do a better job deconflicting naming of characters, and giving more characters voices, well developed voices that speak to individuality. Instead, we have our knight, Edward, Wulfric, Dick, the squires, and occasional foil characters who ask questions so the others can state how amazing Alfraed is, or he himself can explain his thinking.

Overall, this is one of my favorite entires in the series. It starts with a harrowing, well described and narrated trip through danger, and ends with actual, genuine conflict that seems to challenge and grow Alfraed before our eyes, ripping some of the naivety that has plagued him throughout the series away. I give this book four stars because I really do enjoy the story, but the grammatical and spelling mistakes are simply unacceptable.

Northern Knight The Anarchy Series Book 3 eBook Griff Hosker Reviews

Love everything by this author.
This is an excellent novel of the time period. Does not disappoint. The author keeps you engaged for the entire novel. Looking forward to the next installment!!!
The character of Alfraede is certainly that of a flawless hero. Interesting weave of fact and fiction that puts some
meat on historical bones. Makes me want to revisit England to see the locales. Likely that I'll read other Hosker
writing before long.
great read
I enjoyed the book very much. It is incredible and difficult to weave history and fiction. I am intrigued with the Time of Anarchy as I don't know much about it. Also the method of fighting and the tactics intrigue me. The progress of the main character in building up his domains keeps me interested in his affairs. I will keep reading the series. I have always enjoyed the Middle Ages, knights, kings, chivalry, the role of the Church since I was a child and read The Knights of the Round Table.
A good story, nudging historical accuracy. If only Griff would get someone who is a good speller and grammarian, and a half-way decent editor, his books would be up there with the best. And he would certainly sell a hell of a lot more than he currently does.
Good blend of character development and action -- no lack of stirring moments to hold the reader's interest. From a historical perspective, the author admits there were a couple of inconsistencies in earlier novels that have been remedied to some extent (Richard vs. Robert as far as Henry the Lion's illegitimate son). Better maps would be useful (very difficult for to do so far in eBooks, I might add). The author's inability to use punctuation marks properly is annoying and distracts from what could be a more fluid narrative. There is a total absence of commas or other clause dividers. Occasional typographical errors do not help. Once you get past that, a very enjoyable read; the protagonist is fearless and capable in battle, but has a number of character flaws that keep the reader interested to see where the Baron will slip up. Antagonists are vile enough to be dislikable without being caricatures. Discussions of weapons, armor, and means/methods of battle are well-researched and the descriptions are thorough. I'll keep reading if he'll keep writing.
